Mountaineer is the only microgrid district focused on delivering hyperscale AI computing capabilities in West Virginia. Further, Mountaineer is one of two of West Virginia’s currently designate high-impact industrial business development microgrid districts. The microgrid district designation enables Monarch to provide Monarch AI Data Center System with power generated onsite without requiring approvals from FERC, PJM, local utilities or counties. By utilizing a pro pragmatic “all of the above” energy strategy, Mountaineer leverages West Virginia’s history as an energy innovation leader while creating hundreds of quality jobs serving the fast-growing AI data center market.
The Mountaineer GigaSystem received high-impact industrial business development microgrid district designation in 2022 based on Code 5B 2-21. This microgrid designation was recently expanded to allow for the utilization of all power generation technologies with the passage of West Virginia House Bill 2014. The microgrid designation therefore uniquely enables all onsite power generation for Monarch’s AI data centers.
